Overview
Indore district is an administrative district in the Malwa region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The district takes its name from its headquarters, the city of Indore, which is the largest urban centre and the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh. It forms part of the Indore Division and lies on the Malwa Plateau in the west-central part of the state.

Geography
The district is situated on the southern edge of the Malwa Plateau, bordered by Dewas district to the east, Ujjain district to the north, Dhar district to the west, and Khargone and Khandwa districts to the south. The terrain is generally undulating, with the Vindhyan range forming the southern boundary. The Chambal river rises near Janapav in the south of the district. Other streams include the Khan and the Saraswati, which flow through Indore city.
The climate is subtropical, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and mild winters. Black cotton soil dominates the agricultural land, supporting crops such as wheat, soybean, cotton, and pulses.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector and is part of the Indore Division along with neighbouring districts. It is divided into several tehsils and development blocks, including Indore, Mhow (Dr. Ambedkar Nagar), Sanwer, Depalpur, and Hatod. The district contains the Indore Municipal Corporation, the Mhow Cantonment Board, and a number of nagar parishads and gram panchayats.
History
The region has a long history associated with the Malwa Sultanate, the Mughal Empire, and later the Marathas. In the 18th century, it became the seat of the Holkar dynasty, founded by Malhar Rao Holkar, with the rulers eventually establishing Indore as their capital. Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled from Maheshwar, is particularly remembered for her patronage of temples and public works across India.
Under the British, the Holkar state was a princely state of the Central India Agency. After independence in 1947, Indore acceded to India and became part of Madhya Bharat in 1948, and subsequently of Madhya Pradesh on its formation in 1956.
Economy
Indore district is one of the most industrialised and commercially active districts in Madhya Pradesh. Pithampur, in adjacent Dhar district but functionally linked to Indore, is a major automobile and pharmaceutical hub, while Indore itself hosts industries in textiles, engineering, food processing, and information technology. The district is also a significant centre for trade in agricultural produce, with Indore's mandi being among the largest in central India.
Education and institutions
The district is home to several institutions of national importance, including the Indian Institute of Technology Indore, the Indian Institute of Management Indore, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, and the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal's affiliated centres. Mhow houses the Army War College and the Infantry School, making it an important military training centre.
Transport
Indore is served by Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, the busiest airport in Madhya Pradesh. The district is connected by National Highways including NH 3 and NH 59, and lies on the Western Railway network with Indore Junction as the principal station. The Indore Metro is being developed to serve the urban area.
Demographics and culture
Hindi is the most widely spoken language, with Malwi being the regional dialect. Marathi is also spoken, reflecting the Maratha legacy of the Holkars. Major festivals include Anant Chaturdashi, which is marked by a large procession in Indore city, along with Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Rangpanchami, and Eid.
Significance
Indore district has consistently ranked among the cleanest urban areas in India under the Swachh Bharat Mission surveys, with Indore city repeatedly receiving the top rank in the Swachh Survekshan exercise. The district is widely regarded as the economic and educational nerve centre of Madhya
