Overview
The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a public research university headquartered in Kolkata, with additional centres in Chennai, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Tezpur. Established in 1931, it functions under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation of the Government of India.
ISI was declared an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the Indian Statistical Institute Act, 1959. Its primary activities are research and training in statistics, along with the development of theoretical statistics and its applications across the natural and social sciences.
The institute's key areas of research include statistics, mathematics, theoretical computer science, information science and mathematical economics. In addition to its degree programmes, ISI offers a number of diploma and certificate courses. It also conducts special diploma courses for international students through the International Statistical Education Centre (ISEC), and runs special courses in collaboration with the Central Statistical Office (CSO) for the training of probationary officers of the Indian Statistical Service (ISS).
