The Indian Naval Academy (INA) is the premier officer training institution of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. Located at Ezhimala in the Kannur district of Kerala, it is among the largest naval academies in Asia and is responsible for the basic training of officer cadets and midshipmen before they are commissioned into the sea-going arms of the Indian armed forces.

Overview
The Academy conducts ab-initio training for cadets entering the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard through several entry schemes, including the four-year B.Tech course for cadets from the National Defence Academy (after their initial training at Khadakwasla) and direct entries such as the 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry, the Naval Orientation Course for graduate entrants, and entries for the Education, Logistics, Law and other branches. Women officers are also trained at INA.
Location and campus
The campus is set on a coastal stretch near the Ezhimala hill in north Kerala, between the Kavvayi backwaters and the Arabian Sea. The site offers natural seamanship training facilities, including waterfront access for boatwork, sailing and small-craft handling. The campus contains cadets' squadrons (referred to as houses or messes), academic blocks, parade grounds, sports facilities and a hospital. The Academy is administered by a Commandant of the rank of Vice Admiral.
History
Officer training for the Indian Navy was earlier conducted at several locations. The principal predecessor establishment was the Naval Academy commissioned at Cochin, later moved to INS Mandovi in Goa in 1986, where it functioned until activities were progressively shifted to Ezhimala.
- 1969: Naval Academy established at Cochin.
- 1986: Academy shifted to INS Mandovi, Goa.
- 1987: Foundation stone for a new, larger naval academy laid at Ezhimala by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
- 2009: The Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala was formally inaugurated on 8 January 2009 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, becoming fully functional thereafter.
Training and academics
The flagship programme is a four-year course leading to a Bachelor of Technology degree, awarded through affiliation with Jawaharlal Nehru University. Streams offered include Electronics and Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, suited to the technical demands of modern warship operations. Shorter courses cater to graduate entries who undergo orientation and professional naval training before being assigned to ships and shore establishments.
The curriculum integrates academics with seamanship, navigation, naval warfare studies, weapon systems, drill, physical training, sailing, swimming and adventure activities. On completion of training, cadets pass out as Sub Lieutenants at the Passing Out Parade, traditionally reviewed by senior dignitaries from the armed forces or the Government of India.
Organisation
The Academy is organised into squadrons, with cadets distributed for training, sports and inter-squadron competitions. Each course of cadets is identified by its term, and the senior-most term provides cadet appointments such as the Cadet Captain. The Academy is part of the Southern Naval Command's training architecture, working alongside other establishments such as INS Chilka (sailors' basic training) and the technical schools at Kochi.
Significance
As the single point of entry-level officer training for the Navy and the Coast Guard, the Indian Naval Academy plays a central role in shaping the officer cadre of India's maritime forces. Its establishment at Ezhimala consolidated training that was earlier dispersed across multiple establishments, and the integration of a technical degree programme reflects the increasingly technological character of naval service. The Academy has also contributed to the development of north Kerala through associated infrastructure and connectivity.
