Overview
The Indian National Defence University (INDU), also referred to as the Indian Defence University (IDU), is a proposed defence service university intended for the affiliation of training academies catering to defence servants of the Government of India. It is envisaged to serve the generalist and specialist branches of the Indian Military, and is distinct from the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), which focuses on police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
The university is being established at Binola village in the Gurugram district of Haryana. It is proposed to be designated as an Institute of National Importance (INI). The idea of setting up such a university was first mooted in 1967. However, it is unlikely to become operational in the foreseeable future, despite periodic indications of progress.
As of January 2020, only the perimeter road and boundary walls of the campus had been constructed. Further construction of the main building and teaching infrastructure could not commence pending the passage of the "Indian National Defence University (INDU) Act, 2015", which awaits approval from the Union Cabinet and the Parliament of India in the form of a draft bill.
The site lies on the eastern flank of the Delhi–Jaipur Expressway (NH 48), about 5 km south-west of Pachgaon Chowk on the Western Peripheral Expressway, nearly 11 km south-west of the National Security Guard base, 10 km north-west of the Heritage Transport Museum, 26 km south-west of the Gurugram central business district, and 43 km south-west of Indira Gandhi International Airport. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has established a bus bay for the university along NH 48.
