Background
Civil aviation in India during the 1930s was characterised by the entry of several private operators offering mail and passenger services on routes connecting major colonial centres. Indian National Airways was established in this environment, joining a small set of carriers that included Tata Air Services and other regional operators. The growth of these airlines was closely tied to airmail contracts awarded by the Government of India and to the broader development of aerodromes across the subcontinent.
History
Founded in 1933, Indian National Airways developed scheduled services across northern and eastern India during the late 1930s. During the Second World War, civilian aviation in India was constrained by wartime requirements, and operators such as INA adapted their schedules accordingly.
After the partition of India in 1947, the airline continued to function as one of several private scheduled carriers competing for domestic traffic. In 1953, the Government of India enacted the Air Corporations Act, 1953, which nationalised scheduled air transport. Under this Act, the assets of the existing private domestic airlines, including Indian National Airways, were vested in the newly created Indian Airlines Corporation, while overseas operations were consolidated under Air India International.

Significance
Indian National Airways is remembered as one of the pre-independence pioneers of scheduled aviation in India. Together with the other private carriers absorbed in 1953, it formed part of the foundation of the country's nationalised domestic airline network, which remained a state monopoly until the liberalisation of Indian civil aviation in the 1990s.
