Background
Arranged marriage remains a widely practised institution across much of India, with families, community elders, and professional matchmakers often playing a central role in shortlisting prospective partners. The show situates this tradition within contemporary contexts, including dual-career couples, Indian Americans negotiating cultural expectations, and clients seeking matches across regional, caste, and class lines.
Sima Taparia, referred to in the series as "Sima Aunty" or "Sima from Mumbai", runs a matchmaking practice serving clients in India and abroad. She uses biodata sheets, horoscope or kundli compatibility, and family consultations as part of her process. Smriti Mundhra had earlier explored arranged-marriage themes in her documentary A Suitable Girl (2017), which also featured Taparia.
Format
Each episode follows multiple clients in parallel as Taparia presents potential matches, arranges introductions, and consults with families. The series intersperses interviews with the participants, their parents, astrologers, life coaches, and face readers. Episodes typically conclude with on-screen text updates on the status of each client's search.

Spin-off
A companion series, Jewish Matchmaking, also created by Smriti Mundhra, premiered on Netflix on 3 May 2023, applying a similar format to Jewish matchmaking traditions with matchmaker Aleeza Ben Shalom.
Reception
The series became one of Netflix's most-watched unscripted releases in India in 2020 and generated wide international discussion. Critical reception was mixed. Reviewers praised its observational style, the candour of participants, and the visibility it gave to a culturally specific practice on a global platform. Critics, however, raised concerns that the programme normalised preferences related to caste, skin colour ("fair"), height, and class without sufficient on-screen interrogation. The recurring use of the word "compromise" by Taparia became a widely discussed motif.
The series was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Programme in 2021.
Significance
Indian Matchmaking is among the earliest mainstream international reality formats centred on Indian social customs to achieve sustained global visibility. It contributed to public conversation on the persistence of arranged marriage among Indians and the diaspora, the role of biodata and horoscope matching, and the negotiation between individual choice and family involvement. It also placed Mumbai-based matchmaking practices and Indian American dating cultures within the same narrative frame, reflecting transnational community ties.
