Overview

IISR conducts basic, strategic and applied research on the improvement, production, protection and post-harvest handling of major spice crops grown in India. Its mandate covers a range of crops including black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, paprika and tree spices. The institute also serves as a national repository of germplasm for these crops and disseminates improved varieties and technologies to farmers, extension agencies and the spice industry.

Background and history

The institute traces its origins to research efforts on cardamom and pepper carried out under earlier ICAR arrangements in Kerala and Karnataka. It was reorganised over time into a full-fledged national institute focused on spice crops, with its main campus at Kozhikode and an experimental farm at Peruvannamuzhi in Kozhikode district. A research centre on cardamom is operated at Appangala in the Kodagu district of Karnataka.

Mandate and activities

  • Genetic improvement of spice crops through conventional breeding and biotechnological approaches.
  • Conservation and characterisation of spice germplasm.
  • Development of integrated crop management, nutrient management and disease and pest control strategies.
  • Studies on post-harvest technology, quality evaluation and value addition of spices.
  • Transfer of technology through training programmes, frontline demonstrations and publications for farmers and extension workers.
  • Collaboration with state agricultural universities, the Spices Board of India, and international research institutions.

Research infrastructure

The institute houses laboratories for plant breeding, biotechnology, plant pathology, entomology, soil science, agronomy, plant physiology and crop quality evaluation. Field experimental stations support germplasm conservation, varietal trials and agronomic experiments under varying agro-climatic conditions of the Western Ghats and adjoining regions.

Significance

India is among the world's largest producers, consumers and exporters of spices, and IISR plays a central role in supporting this sector through scientific research. Improved varieties, disease-resistant planting material and crop management practices developed at the institute are widely used by spice growers in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and other spice-producing states. The institute also contributes to policy advice and capacity building in spice cultivation and processing.
