The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER Thiruvananthapuram, often abbreviated IISER TVM) is an autonomous public institution of higher education and research located in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Kerala. It is one of a network of Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research established by the Government of India through the Ministry of Education to promote integrated teaching and research in the basic sciences.

Background

The IISERs were conceived as institutions that would combine undergraduate science education with research at the frontiers of knowledge, aiming to address a perceived gap between universities, which traditionally emphasised teaching, and dedicated research institutes, which had limited undergraduate involvement. IISER Thiruvananthapuram is the Kerala-based member of this network, and is part of a broader effort by the Government of India to strengthen scientific capacity in the country.
