Background

The IISERs were conceived as a network of institutions modelled along the lines of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, with a particular emphasis on undergraduate science education combined with research opportunities. IISER Pune is part of this network, which also includes IISERs at Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati and Berhampur. The institute is intended to address the perceived gap between teaching-focused universities and research-focused national laboratories by providing an integrated environment for both.

Campus and Location

IISER Pune is situated in the Pashan area of Pune, in proximity to several major scientific establishments, including the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), and the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS). This concentration of research institutions has facilitated academic collaborations and shared research initiatives.

Academics

The institute offers a five-year integrated BS–MS programme in the basic sciences, along with Integrated PhD and PhD programmes. Teaching and research are organised around the disciplines of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth and climate science, and the humanities and social sciences, with several interdisciplinary centres supporting cross-domain research.

Admissions

Admission to the BS–MS programme is conducted through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), and previously through channels such as the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) and performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced). Doctoral admissions are based on national-level examinations and institute interviews.

Research

Research at IISER Pune spans fundamental and applied areas in the natural sciences and mathematics. The institute hosts collaborative initiatives in fields including biological sciences, condensed matter physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, ecology and evolution, and pure and applied mathematics. Faculty and students participate in international collaborations and contribute to peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Significance

IISER Pune is regarded as one of the leading institutions for science education and research in India. By offering an integrated curriculum that exposes undergraduate students to active research from an early stage, it has contributed to building a base of researchers in the basic sciences and supports India's broader objectives in scientific human-resource development.
