Overview
IISER Bhopal was set up as part of the Government of India's initiative to create dedicated institutions that combine science education at the undergraduate level with high-quality research, on the model of the Indian Institute of Science. The institute offers integrated and doctoral programmes spanning the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. Like its sister IISERs, it admits students primarily through the IISER Aptitude Test, the JEE (Advanced) channel, and the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY).
Background
The IISER system was conceived during the Eleventh Five Year Plan to address the gap between teaching-focused universities and research-focused national laboratories. The first two IISERs were established at Pune and Kolkata in 2006, followed by IISER Mohali in 2007 and IISER Bhopal and IISER Thiruvananthapuram in 2008. Two more IISERs were later added at Tirupati and Berhampur. Together they were brought under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, conferring on them the status of Institutes of National Importance.
Campus
IISER Bhopal operates from a permanent campus on the outskirts of Bhopal, in the Bhauri area along the Bhopal Bypass Road. The campus houses academic departments, central research facilities, student hostels, faculty housing, and recreational infrastructure. Before the permanent campus became functional, the institute operated from a transit campus in the city.
Academics and research
The institute is organised into departments covering the principal disciplines of basic science along with engineering and humanities support areas. Its core academic departments typically include:
- Biological Sciences
- Chemistry
- Earth and Environmental Sciences
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Economic Sciences
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
- Data Science and Engineering
Flagship academic offerings include the five-year BS–MS dual degree programme, four-year BTech programmes in selected engineering disciplines, integrated PhD programmes, and doctoral research across the sciences and engineering. Research at IISER Bhopal spans areas such as condensed matter physics, astrophysics, organic and materials chemistry, structural biology, ecology and climate science, pure and applied mathematics, and computational and data sciences.
Governance
IISER Bhopal is governed by a Board of Governors, with academic affairs administered through a Senate. The institute is headed by a Director, supported by Deans for academic, research, and student affairs. The Visitor of the institute is the President of India, in keeping with its status as an Institute of National Importance.
