Overview
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public, deemed research university dedicated to higher education and research in science, engineering, design, and management. It is located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and is one of India's principal institutions for advanced study in these fields.
The institute was established in 1909 with the active support of the industrialist Jamsetji Tata, owing to which it is locally known as the Tata Institute. The vision behind its founding was to create a centre of excellence that would contribute to scientific knowledge and the industrial development of India.
IISc was granted deemed university status in 1958, which enabled it to award its own degrees and broaden the scope of its academic programmes. Its activities span a range of disciplines across the natural sciences, engineering, and interdisciplinary areas, with a strong emphasis on research alongside postgraduate and doctoral teaching.
In 2018, the institute was recognised as an Institute of Eminence, a designation intended to support select higher education institutions in India in pursuing world-class teaching and research. IISc continues to function as a major centre for scientific research and graduate education in the country.
