Background
The Indian Institutes of Management were created by the Government of India as institutions devoted to postgraduate management education, executive education, and research. Following the success of the earlier IIMs at Calcutta, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode, the central government progressively announced new IIMs to extend access to such education in additional states. IIM Amritsar was established as part of this expansion to serve the northern region of India, and is the first IIM to be located in Punjab.
Academic programmes
In line with other institutions in the IIM system, IIM Amritsar offers postgraduate management education leading to a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, along with executive education and doctoral-level research programmes in management. Admission to its flagship MBA programme is based on the Common Admission Test (CAT), which is conducted by the IIMs on a rotational basis.
Curriculum focus
The curriculum covers core areas of management such as finance, marketing, operations, human resources, strategy, economics, information systems, and organisational behaviour, supplemented by electives, internships and industry projects.
Governance
IIM Amritsar functions as an autonomous body. After the enactment of the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017, the IIMs, including IIM Amritsar, were declared Institutions of National Importance and were empowered to grant degrees in their own name. The institute is administered by a Board of Governors, with academic affairs led by a Director.
Campus
IIM Amritsar is located in the city of Amritsar, a major historical, cultural and commercial centre in Punjab. The institute initially operated from a transit campus while a permanent campus was developed in the region. Amritsar's location near the India–Pakistan border and its position as a hub for trade, tourism and industry provide a distinctive regional context for the institute's academic and outreach activities.
Significance
As the first IIM in Punjab, IIM Amritsar plays a role in strengthening management education and research capacity in northern India. It contributes to the development of managerial talent for industry, public service and entrepreneurship, and offers an institutional platform for engagement with businesses in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring states.
