The institute is hosted within Sri City, an integrated business township close to Chennai that houses a large concentration of manufacturing and technology firms, providing the institute with proximity to industry.
Academics
The institute primarily offers undergraduate programmes leading to the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in disciplines such as Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering. It also runs postgraduate and doctoral programmes in computing and allied areas. Admission to the B.Tech. programmes is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), with seats allotted via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process.
Campus
The campus is situated within the Sri City special economic zone, on the Andhra Pradesh side of the Andhra Pradesh–Tamil Nadu border, north of Chennai. Its location places it close to a cluster of multinational manufacturing units and technology companies operating in Sri City.
Significance
As one of the IIITs created under the PPP model, IIIT Sri City contributes to the central government's effort to broaden the country's research and human-resource base in information technology. Its statutory status as an Institute of National Importance places it alongside other autonomous degree-granting technical institutions in India.
