Overview

IIIT Lucknow is part of the network of IIITs created by the Ministry of Education (formerly the Ministry of Human Resource Development) to expand specialised education and research in information technology in India. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in computer science, information technology, and related interdisciplinary areas.

Background

The IIIT system was conceptualised to address the demand for skilled professionals and research output in information technology by combining central government, state government, and industry participation. Under the PPP model, the central government, the host state government, and industry partners share the responsibility of supporting the institute. IIIT Lucknow was established within this framework, with Uttar Pradesh as its host state.

Statutory status

The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017, and its subsequent amendments granted statutory recognition to IIITs set up under the PPP scheme, including IIIT Lucknow. The Act empowers these institutes to grant degrees and conduct independent academic and research activities as Institutes of National Importance.

Academics

The institute primarily offers:

  • Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes in computer science and information technology related streams.
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech.) programmes in specialised areas of computing.
  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes in computer science, information technology, and allied research areas.

Admissions to the undergraduate programmes are conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), with counselling carried out by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Postgraduate admissions are typically based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Governance

As an institute under the IIIT (PPP) Act, IIIT Lucknow is governed by a Board of Governors with representation from the central government, state government, and industry partners. The Director functions as the principal academic and executive officer of the institute.

Significance

IIIT Lucknow contributes to higher education and research capacity in Uttar Pradesh, a state that has historically had limited central technical institutions relative to its population. By focusing exclusively on information technology and computing, it complements broader engineering institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and supports the development of skilled human resources for the Indian IT industry.
