Background

IIITs were conceived to address the demand for skilled professionals in information technology and to support research in IT-driven sectors of the Indian economy. Under the PPP scheme, each institute is jointly funded by the Union Government, the relevant State Government, and industry partners, with the Union Government holding the largest share. Institutes set up under this scheme have been declared Institutes of National Importance through the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, granting them the authority to award degrees in their own name.

IIIT Dharwad was established as part of this expansion, with the Government of Karnataka as the state partner. Dharwad, a twin city with Hubballi, is recognised as one of the educational hubs of northern Karnataka and hosts several institutions of higher learning, making it a suitable host for a centrally supported technical institute.

Academics

The institute offers undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes in fields aligned with its core mandate, including computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, and data science and artificial intelligence. Postgraduate and doctoral research programmes have also been developed, focusing on areas relevant to information and communication technologies. Admission to the undergraduate programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) and the centralised counselling administered by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

Campus

The institute initially operated from a temporary campus while a permanent campus was developed on land allocated by the Government of Karnataka in the Dharwad district. The permanent campus is intended to host academic buildings, hostels, faculty residences, laboratories, and shared facilities for teaching and research.

Significance

IIIT Dharwad contributes to the broader objective of decentralising high-quality technical education in India by establishing a centrally supported institute outside the traditional metropolitan centres. By focusing on information technology and allied fields, it supports human-resource development for India's software, electronics, and digital services industries, and provides a regional anchor for research and innovation in northern Karnataka.
