Background
Imtiaz Ali was born in Jamshedpur and brought up partly in Patna. He moved to Delhi for higher education, studying at Hindu College, where he was active in the college dramatics society. He later trained in mass communication at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, in New Delhi, before relocating to Mumbai to work in television and films.
Television career
Before entering films, Ali worked in Indian television during the 1990s and early 2000s. He directed and wrote episodes for shows such as Purushkshetra, Kurukshetra and Imtihaan on Doordarshan and Zee TV. This period shaped his approach to long-form character writing.
Film career
Debut and early work
Ali made his feature film debut with Socha Na Tha (2005), a romantic comedy starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. While modest at the box office, the film was noted for its naturalistic dialogue and small-town milieu.
Breakthrough
Jab We Met (2007), starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, became a major commercial and critical success and is regarded as a defining romantic film of its decade. It established Ali's signature template of road journeys, talkative female leads, and emotionally repressed male protagonists.
Later films
Love Aaj Kal (2009) starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone and intercut a contemporary romance with a 1960s love story. Rockstar (2011), with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead and music by A. R. Rahman, traced an artist's emotional descent and is considered among Ali's most ambitious works.
Highway (2014), starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, dealt with abduction and trauma against the landscapes of north India. Tamasha (2015) reunited Ranbir Kapoor with Deepika Padukone in a story about identity and corporate conformity. Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) starred Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma. He revisited Love Aaj Kal in 2020 with Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan.
Amar Singh Chamkila (2024), a biographical musical on the Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, was released on Netflix and received wide critical acclaim.
Production and other ventures
Ali founded the production company Window Seat Films, which has backed projects across feature films, web series and short films. He has also produced Laila Majnu (2018), directed by his brother Sajid Ali, and the streaming series She (2020) on Netflix, which he co-created.
Style and themes
His films are characterised by travel, music as narrative device, and protagonists negotiating the gap between expected social roles and inner desire. Locations such as Manali, Kashmir, Corsica and Rajasthan recur in his work. He has frequently collaborated with composers A. R. Rahman, Pritam, and Irshad Kamil as lyricist.
Awards and recognition
Ali has received Filmfare Awards and other industry honours for his writing and direction, particularly for Jab We Met and Rockstar. He is regarded as a key figure in shaping the modern Hindi romantic film alongside contemporaries such as Anurag Kashyap and Vishal Bhardwaj.
Personal life
His brother Sajid Ali is also a filmmaker. Imtiaz Ali generally avoids public discussion of his personal life and is based in Mumbai.
