Background
NDTV, primarily known for its news operations through NDTV 24x7, NDTV India and NDTV Profit, sought to diversify into entertainment broadcasting in the mid-2000s. To this end, it floated NDTV Imagine Limited, a separate subsidiary tasked with operating non-news lifestyle and entertainment channels. The flagship channel of this venture, NDTV Imagine, was positioned to compete directly with established Hindi GECs.
Launch and programming
NDTV Imagine was launched in 2008 with significant marketing investment. Its early line-up combined mythological dramas, family soaps, reality shows and dramatic series, a programming mix typical of Hindi GECs of the period.
The channel is most associated with high-profile mythological and reality formats. Ramayan, a contemporary retelling of the Hindu epic, was among its flagship shows. The reality matchmaking show Rakhi Ka Swayamvar, featuring television personality Rakhi Sawant, attracted considerable public attention and was followed by similar swayamvar-format programmes. Other notable shows aired on the channel during its NDTV Imagine phase included Dharam Veer, Bandini, Radha Ki Betiyaan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi, Kitani Mohabbat Hai and the talent show Junoon - Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka.
Sister channels
Under NDTV Imagine Limited, additional channels were launched to broaden the bouquet, including:
- NDTV Imagine Showbiz – a movie and entertainment-focused channel.
- NDTV Lumiere – a world cinema channel screening international films.
Acquisition by Turner
Citing the high cost of running a Hindi GEC in a saturated market, NDTV decided to exit the entertainment business. In 2010, the channel and related entertainment assets were sold to Turner Broadcasting System, the international media company then owned by Time Warner. Following the transaction, the channels operated under Turner General Entertainment Networks India, and the flagship was rebranded simply as Imagine TV, dropping the NDTV prefix.
Decline and closure
Despite the change in ownership, Imagine TV struggled to gain consistent ratings against larger GECs that had stronger fiction line-ups and bigger budgets. Turner found it difficult to make the channel commercially viable, and after a period of declining viewership, Imagine TV ceased broadcasting in 2012. Its closure was widely cited at the time as an example of the difficulty new entrants faced in the Hindi GEC market.

Significance
The trajectory of NDTV Imagine and its successor Imagine TV is often discussed in studies of Indian television as a case of the structural challenges in the Hindi general entertainment segment. It highlighted issues such as the high content investment required, dependence on a few hit shows, and the dominance of incumbents in advertiser preference. The channel's exit, alongside other unsuccessful GEC launches of the period, contributed to a consolidation in the Hindi entertainment market.
From a programming standpoint, the channel was credited with popularising the celebrity matchmaking reality format on Indian television and with reviving interest in mythological dramas before such content saw a wider revival on other channels.
