Background
The project was conceived as a large-scale destination park aimed at the catchment area between Mumbai and Pune, two of India's largest urban centres. It was developed by Adlabs Entertainment Limited, a company associated with media entrepreneur Manmohan Shetty, who had earlier built and sold the Adlabs Films business. The site was chosen for its proximity to the expressway, allowing day-trip access from both metropolitan regions.
History
- Theme Park: The main theme park opened to the public in 2013, featuring a mix of imported rides, India-themed attractions, live entertainment shows, and themed dining zones.
- Water Park: A separate water park within the same complex opened in 2014, with slides, wave pools, and family attractions.
- Initial public offering: Adlabs Entertainment Limited listed its shares on Indian stock exchanges in 2015.
- Snow Park: An indoor snow park was added to expand the complex into a year-round, multi-format destination.
- Hotel: Novotel Imagicaa, a co-branded hotel, was developed adjacent to the park to support overnight stays and group tourism.
- Rebranding and restructuring: The operating company was subsequently renamed Imagicaaworld Entertainment Limited, and the park underwent ownership and management changes following financial restructuring.
Park zones and attractions
The theme park is organised into themed zones inspired by global and Indian settings, with roller coasters, dark rides, simulator-based attractions, and stage shows. Notable attractions have included a large inverted roller coaster, a motion-based dark ride themed around Indian mythology, and a 4D theatre experience. The water park offers high-speed slides, a lazy river, and a children's play area, while the snow park provides sub-zero indoor activities such as snow play and toboggan rides.
Significance
Imagicaa is considered a landmark in the development of organised theme park tourism in India. Prior to its opening, large-scale international-style theme parks were limited in the country, with Essel World in Mumbai and Wonderla parks in southern India being among the principal examples. Imagicaa contributed to expanding the leisure tourism economy of the Mumbai–Pune corridor and influenced subsequent investment in integrated park-and-hotel destinations in India.
