Background

The university grew out of the Institute of Management Studies (IMS), Dehradun, a management education institute associated with the Unison Group. Following the enactment of state legislation in Uttarakhand permitting the establishment of private universities, IMS Dehradun was reconstituted as IMS Unison University, allowing it to offer a broader range of degree programmes under a single university framework.

Campus and location

The university's campus is situated on the outskirts of Dehradun, in the Doon Valley at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas. Dehradun is a long-standing centre of education in northern India, hosting institutions such as the Forest Research Institute, the Indian Military Academy and the Doon School, and IUU forms part of this wider academic landscape.

Academic structure

IMS Unison University is organised into schools that broadly cover the following areas:

  • School of Management
  • School of Law
  • School of Mass Communication
  • School of Liberal Arts
  • School of Hospitality Management
  • School of Computer Applications

Programmes typically include the BBA, MBA, BA LLB and LLB, BA (Hons), BCA, MCA, BA in Journalism and Mass Communication, BHM (hospitality), and doctoral (PhD) research across these disciplines.

Governance

As a state private university, IUU is established and governed under an Act of the Uttarakhand state legislature, which provides for the constitution of its governing bodies, academic council and board of management. The university is led by a Chancellor and a Vice-Chancellor, with the sponsoring body associated with the Unison Group.

Significance

IMS Unison University is one of several private universities established in Uttarakhand in the years after the state's creation in 2000, reflecting the expansion of higher education capacity in the Himalayan region. Its programmes in management and law, in particular, build on the earlier reputation of IMS Dehradun and contribute to Dehradun's profile as a regional hub for professional education.
