History and timeline

  • 2015: IIT Tirupati commenced academic operations, initially functioning from a transit campus while the permanent campus was being developed. It was mentored by IIT Madras during its early years.
  • Subsequent years: The institute progressively expanded its academic departments, research centres and student intake, and began shifting activities to its permanent campus on the outskirts of Tirupati.

Campus and academics

The permanent campus of IIT Tirupati is located in the Tirupati region, set against the backdrop of the Eastern Ghats. The institute houses departments covering core engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, electrical, computer science and chemical engineering, alongside departments of physics, chemistry, mathematics and humanities and social sciences. Research activity spans areas including materials, communications, sustainable infrastructure, computing and applied sciences.

Significance

As the IIT designated for Andhra Pradesh, the institute plays a notable role in the state's higher education and research landscape. It contributes to the wider IIT network's mission of producing technical talent, supporting research and development, and engaging with industry and government on technology-driven projects.
