Background
IIT Jodhpur was established as part of the expansion of the IIT system announced by the Government of India, which sanctioned the creation of new IITs to widen access to high-quality technical education across the country. The institute initially functioned from a temporary campus before shifting to its permanent campus on the outskirts of Jodhpur, located along the Nagaur Road in the Karwar region.
The permanent campus is spread over a large tract of land allocated by the Government of Rajasthan and has been developed with academic blocks, research centres, hostels, and staff housing. Given the arid climate of the Thar region, the campus has incorporated planning and infrastructure choices oriented toward energy efficiency and water management.
Academics
The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through departments and schools covering disciplines such as computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil and infrastructure engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgical and materials engineering, bioscience and bioengineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, humanities and social sciences, and management.
Admissions to the Bachelor of Technology programmes are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) using the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. Postgraduate admissions are based on national-level examinations such as GATE, while doctoral admissions follow institute-specific processes.
Research and centres
IIT Jodhpur has developed interdisciplinary schools and centres in areas such as artificial intelligence and data science, internet of things, smart healthcare, and sustainable energy. Research at the institute emphasises problems relevant to desert ecosystems, infrastructure, and digital technologies, alongside fundamental science and engineering.
Campus and location
Jodhpur, the second-largest city of Rajasthan, lies in western India and provides the regional context for the institute. The permanent campus is situated outside the city and is connected to Jodhpur by road. The institute operates academic facilities, laboratories, a central library, residential hostels for students, and faculty and staff quarters on the campus.
Governance
As with other IITs, IIT Jodhpur is governed by a Board of Governors, with academic matters administered by the Senate. The Director serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the institute. The institute functions under the overall coordination of the IIT Council, chaired by the Union Minister of Education.
Significance
IIT Jodhpur contributes to the Government of India's policy goal of expanding the IIT system beyond the original institutes and providing technical education and research capacity in regions that historically had fewer such institutions. Its presence in western Rajasthan has supported research collaborations on regionally relevant themes, including arid-zone technologies, renewable energy, and heritage conservation.
