Background
IIT Dharwad was announced as part of a wider expansion of the IIT system that added new institutes in several Indian states. Karnataka was selected as a host state, and Dharwad — one of the principal urban centres of north Karnataka and part of the Hubballi–Dharwad twin city region — was chosen as the site. The institute was established to strengthen technical education and research capacity in the region, which had previously had limited access to centrally-funded technical institutions of this stature.
In its formative years, IIT Dharwad functioned with mentorship from IIT Bombay, which assisted in academic planning, faculty recruitment support, and initial administrative setup. The institute initially operated from a temporary campus in Belur, Dharwad, before transitioning toward its permanent campus in the same district.
Academics
The institute offers undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes in core engineering disciplines, including Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, with additional programmes added over time as the institute expanded. It also offers postgraduate programmes at the Master's level and doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes across engineering and the sciences. Admission to the B.Tech. programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) and the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) process common to all IITs.
Academic activities are organised through departments covering computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical, materials and aerospace engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and the humanities and social sciences.
Campus
The permanent campus is being developed on a site allotted by the Government of Karnataka in Dharwad district. The campus master plan provides for academic blocks, research facilities, student hostels, faculty and staff residences, and recreational and sporting infrastructure. Dharwad is connected to the rest of Karnataka and India by rail and road, and by air through the nearby Hubballi Airport.
