Geography and layout

Hulimavu is situated to the south of central Bangalore, between the localities of Bilekahalli and Gottigere along Bannerghatta Road. The suburb is characterised by a mix of older village settlements, planned residential layouts, apartment complexes, and commercial frontage along the main road. The Hulimavu Lake, one of the surviving water bodies in southern Bangalore, lies within the locality and forms part of the city's network of interconnected tanks.

Background

Like several outlying parts of Bangalore, Hulimavu originated as a village on the city's southern fringe before being absorbed into the urban area as the metropolis expanded along Bannerghatta Road. Its growth accelerated with the development of institutional and commercial nodes further north on the same corridor, including hospitals, technology parks, and educational campuses, which made the locality a convenient residential base.

Civic administration

Hulimavu falls within a BBMP ward of the same name under the Bommanahalli zone. Civic services including water supply, sewerage, road maintenance, and solid waste management are administered by the BBMP, with water provided by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).

Transport

Bannerghatta Road provides the primary road connection, linking Hulimavu northwards to Jayanagar, J. P. Nagar, and the city centre, and southwards to Gottigere and Bannerghatta. The locality is served by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus routes operating along the corridor. The under-construction Pink Line (Reach 6) of the Namma Metro, which runs along Bannerghatta Road between Gottigere and Nagawara, includes a station at Hulimavu, intended to substantially improve public transport access to the suburb.

Significance

Hulimavu is representative of the rapid suburbanisation of southern Bangalore in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Its position on Bannerghatta Road places it within the catchment of major institutions on the same corridor, and the upcoming metro connectivity is expected to further integrate the locality with the wider city.
