Background
The franchise was conceived by producer Sajid Nadiadwala as a multi-starrer comedy property in the tradition of earlier Hindi confusion comedies. Housefull (2010)
Directed by Sajid Khan, the first film starred Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan and Boman Irani. Set largely in London and Italy, the plot revolves around an unlucky man whose attempts at marriage repeatedly go wrong. The film's commercial success established the property as a viable franchise.
Housefull 2 (2012)
Also directed by Sajid Khan, the sequel was subtitled The Dirty Dozen. It featured a larger ensemble including Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Riteish Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Asin, Jacqueline Fernandez, Zarine Khan, Shazahn Padamsee, and veterans Mithun Chakraborty, Rishi Kapoor, Randhish Trivedi (Randhir Kapoor) and Boman Irani. Shot in part on a luxury yacht and in the United Kingdom, it was a major box-office success.
Housefull 3 (2016)
Directed by Sajid–Farhad (Sajid Samji and Farhad Samji), the film starred Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lisa Haydon and Nargis Fakhri, with Boman Irani and Jackie Shroff in supporting roles. Set in London, the plot involves three men feigning disabilities to win the approval of a wealthy father.
Housefull 4 (2019)
Directed initially by Sajid Khan and subsequently completed by Farhad Samji, the film introduced a reincarnation premise spanning 1419 and the present day. It starred Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Pooja Hegde and Kriti Kharbanda, with Rana Daggubati, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sharad Kelkar and Chunky Panday in additional roles. Released during Diwali, it was among the higher-grossing Hindi films of the year.
Housefull 5 (2025)
Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, the fifth instalment is set on a cruise liner and built around a murder-mystery comedy premise. The cast includes Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Fardeen Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri and Chitrangda Singh, among others. The film was released theatrically in two alternative versions with different climaxes.
