Overview

The Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a deemed-to-be university based in Mumbai, established by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) of the Government of India. The institute was set up to bring together and unify the academic programmes of several constituent institutions functioning under the Department of Atomic Energy, providing them with a common degree-granting framework.

HBNI functions primarily as an umbrella academic body. Its constituent units include various research and training institutions associated with the DAE, which conduct teaching and research across the basic sciences, engineering sciences, mathematical sciences, life sciences, health sciences and other related disciplines. Through this arrangement, students enrolled at the constituent institutions pursue postgraduate and doctoral programmes under the academic umbrella of HBNI.

Homi Bhabha National Institute and its constituent units have been recognised as institutions of excellence under Section 4(b) of The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006. This statutory recognition places them within a specific category of institutions identified by the Government of India for their role in advanced research and specialised academic activity.

The institute has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). HBNI received an A+ grade with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.40 on a four-point scale, with the accreditation valid up to 25 March 2026.
