The Hisar Urban Agglomeration is the contiguous built-up area centred on the city of Hisar in the Indian state of Haryana. As an urban agglomeration (UA), it groups the Hisar Municipal Corporation with adjoining out-growths and census towns that share continuous urban development, and is enumerated as a single statistical unit by the Census of India. Background
Hisar was founded in 1354 by Firuz Shah Tughlaq, who built the fortified settlement of Hisar-e-Firoza on the route between Delhi and the north-western frontier. The historic town later expanded under successive administrations and, in the post-Independence period, became a district headquarters within Punjab and then Haryana after the state's reorganisation in 1966. The modern urban agglomeration reflects the city's growth beyond its older walled core into surrounding sectors, industrial estates, and institutional campuses.
Geography
The agglomeration lies on the flat alluvial plain of western Haryana, in a semi-arid zone bordering the Thar fringe. It is connected by National Highway 9 (the Delhi–Fazilka corridor) and lies on the Northern Railway's Delhi–Bathinda line. The Western Yamuna Canal system supplies irrigation and drinking water to the surrounding region.
Civic and administrative structure
The core of the agglomeration is governed by the Municipal Corporation of Hisar, while peripheral settlements may fall under separate gram panchayats or notified area committees. As an urban agglomeration, Hisar is treated by the Census of India as a single integrated unit comprising the core municipal area together with its out-growths.
Economy and institutions
The Hisar agglomeration is a regional centre for trade, education, and industry. Notable institutions located within or adjoining the urban area include:
- Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), one of Asia's largest agricultural universities.
- Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST).
- Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS).
- The National Research Centre on Equines and the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes.
- Hisar Airport, being developed as a civil aviation hub for Haryana.
Hisar is also known for its steel and galvanised wire industries, cotton and grain trading, and agro-processing units, earning it the local epithet of a "steel city" of north India.
Significance
As a Class I urban centre, the Hisar Urban Agglomeration functions as the principal economic, educational, and administrative hub for a large rural hinterland in western Haryana. Its concentration of agricultural research and veterinary institutions makes it particularly important for livestock and crop science in northern India.
