Background

The Hindustan Group of Institutions was established by K. C. G. Verghese, who founded the Hindustan College of Engineering in 1985. The college was among the early private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and had a particular focus on aeronautical engineering. Following sustained growth in academic programmes, infrastructure, and research output, the institution was conferred deemed-to-be university status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, becoming the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science.

Academics

The university is organised into multiple schools and departments, including:

  • School of Aeronautical Sciences
  • School of Engineering, including departments of mechanical, civil, electrical and electronics, and computer science engineering
  • School of Computing Sciences
  • School of Architecture
  • School of Management
  • School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences

Programmes are offered at the B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Com, BBA, BCA, M.Tech, MBA, MCA, and Ph.D. levels, among others.

Campus

The principal campus at Padur lies on the Chennai–Mahabalipuram stretch, with additional facilities including the Hindustan College of Engineering campus at Kelambakkam. The campuses house academic blocks, laboratories, hostels, sports facilities and a central library, and the institution operates a flying club and aerospace-related laboratories aligned with its aeronautical heritage.

Significance

HITS is one of several deemed universities in Tamil Nadu and contributes to the state's concentration of technical higher education institutions in and around Chennai. Its long-standing aeronautical engineering programme is among its more distinctive academic offerings within the private higher education sector in southern India.
