Overview

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is a public state university located at Summer Hill in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It serves as one of the principal institutions of higher learning in the state, offering programmes across a wide range of academic disciplines.

The university was established on 22 July 1970 through The Himachal Pradesh University Act, 1970 (HP Act No 17 of 1970), enacted by the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Since its inception, it has functioned as a state-funded institution catering to students from Himachal Pradesh and beyond.

HPU has been accorded Grade 'A' status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university is organised into 13 faculties, of which 11 encompass 52 departments along with 5 centres and institutes. Together, these academic units offer 132 academic programmes spanning the humanities, sciences, social sciences, commerce, management, law, education, and other fields.
