Background

The university was carved out of the jurisdiction of Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, to serve the higher education needs of the Durg division of Chhattisgarh. As an affiliating institution, it oversees a large number of government and private colleges spread across the districts in its territorial jurisdiction, conducting examinations and awarding degrees in arts, science, commerce, education, law, and other disciplines offered by its constituent and affiliated colleges.

Academics and affiliation

The university awards undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degrees through its affiliated colleges. Programmes are typically offered in the faculties of arts, science, commerce, education, law, management, and life sciences. Research scholars pursue doctoral work under faculty members associated with departments and recognised research centres in affiliated institutions.

Location and significance

Durg, where the university is headquartered, lies in the industrial belt of Chhattisgarh adjoining Bhilai, a major steel-producing centre. The establishment of a separate university for the region was intended to decentralise higher education administration in Chhattisgarh and bring examination and affiliation services closer to students and colleges in the Durg division.
