Background

Harris Jayaraj was born in Chennai. His father, S. M. Jayaraj, was associated with film music, which exposed him to the industry from an early age. Before turning to independent composition, he worked as a programmer and assistant for several composers in the Tamil film industry, gaining experience in music production and arrangement.

Career

Debut and breakthrough

Harris Jayaraj's career as an independent composer began with Minnale (2001), a romantic film directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. The soundtrack, featuring tracks such as "Vaseegara" sung by Bombay Jayashri, was a commercial and critical success and established him as a major new voice in Tamil film music. The Hindi remake, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, released the same year, also carried his score.

2000s

Through the 2000s, Harris Jayaraj scored a series of commercially successful films, including Majunu (2001), 12B (2001), Saathiya (2002, Hindi), Kaakha Kaakha (2003), Ghajini (2005, Tamil version directed by A. R. Murugadoss), Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006), Sivaji: The Boss (in collaboration with A. R. Rahman was not the case—he was associated with other ventures of the period), Unnale Unnale (2007), and Vaaranam Aayiram (2008). His work with Gautham Vasudev Menon became a defining partnership of the decade.

2010s

His output in the 2010s included Ayan (2009), Singam (2010), 7aum Arivu (2011), Nanban (2012), Thuppakki (2012), Maattrraan (2012), Yennai Arindhaal (2015) and Kaththi Sandai (2016), among others.
