Background
The university was created to consolidate higher education in media studies within Rajasthan under a single dedicated institution. Prior to its establishment, journalism and mass communication programmes in the state were offered primarily as departments within general universities. HJU was conceived as a specialised institution focusing exclusively on media education, with the aim of producing trained professionals for print, broadcast, digital and other forms of mass media.
The institution carries the name of Haridev Joshi (1921–1995), a freedom fighter and Congress leader who began his public life as a journalist before entering politics, and who was associated with the development of media and education infrastructure in Rajasthan.
Academics
The university offers programmes covering areas such as print journalism, electronic and broadcast media, advertising and public relations, new media, and media research. Its curriculum typically combines theoretical study of communication with practical training in reporting, editing, production and digital content creation. The university also undertakes short-term training, workshops and capacity-building activities for working media professionals and students from other institutions.
Significance
HJU is among the few state universities in India devoted solely to journalism and mass communication. By concentrating resources on a single discipline, it serves as a regional centre for media education in north-western India and supports the growth of Hindi-language and regional-language journalism in addition to English-medium media studies.
