Background

Hardik Pandya was born on 11 October 1993 in Surat, Gujarat. The family later moved to Vadodara, where he and his elder brother Krunal Pandya trained at a local cricket academy. He came up through the Baroda age-group system and made his first-class debut for Baroda in the Ranji Trophy.

Career

Domestic and IPL

Pandya made his Indian Premier League debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2015. He was a member of Mumbai Indians sides that won multiple IPL titles, contributing as a finisher with the bat and as a seam-bowling option. Ahead of the 2022 IPL season, he was signed as captain of the newly formed Gujarat Titans franchise, leading them to the title in their debut season. He returned to the Mumbai Indians in 2024.

International career

He made his T20I debut for India in January 2016 against Australia, and his ODI debut later the same year. His Test debut followed in 2017 against Sri Lanka, where he scored a century at Pallekele. Pandya was part of the Indian squads at multiple ICC events, including the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, where India finished runners-up, and successive ICC Men's T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup tournaments.

Captaincy

Pandya has captained India in T20Is, including bilateral series, and has deputised in ODIs. He led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and to the final in 2023.

Playing style

Pandya is regarded as a powerful middle and lower-order striker, often used as a finisher in limited-overs cricket. As a bowler he operates at medium-fast pace and is used in the powerplay and death overs. Recurring back injuries have, at times, restricted his bowling workload.

Significance

Pandya is widely seen as a key seam-bowling all-rounder for India in white-ball cricket, a role the team had long sought to fill. His performances at the IPL and in international tournaments have made him one of the more prominent Indian cricketers of the late 2010s and 2020s.
