Background

HCLTech traces its origins to Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL), founded in 1976 by Shiv Nadar and a group of associates who left DCM to build indigenous computing hardware. Over the following decades, the HCL Group diversified into software services and global IT delivery. HCL Technologies was incorporated as a separate entity to focus on global software services and was later listed on Indian stock exchanges, becoming the publicly traded services arm of the group.

History and timeline

  • 1976: HCL is founded by Shiv Nadar and colleagues, initially focused on computing hardware in India.
  • 1991: HCL enters into a joint venture with Hewlett-Packard, expanding its reach in IT products and services.
  • 1999: HCL Technologies is listed on Indian stock exchanges following its public issue, separating the global software services business.
  • 2000s: The company expands its global delivery footprint across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, building capabilities in infrastructure management and engineering services.
  • 2008: HCL Technologies acquires the British IT services firm Axon Group, then one of the largest overseas acquisitions by an Indian IT company, strengthening its SAP consulting practice.
  • 2018–2019: The company acquires select software products from IBM, including assets in security, marketing and commerce, broadening its products and platforms business.
  • 2021: C. Vijayakumar takes over as Chief Executive Officer; Roshni Nadar Malhotra serves as Chairperson of the company.
  • 2022: The company rebrands as HCLTech, adopting a new logo and unified identity across its services and products businesses.

Operations and services

HCLTech's offerings are typically organised across three broad streams:

  • IT and Business Services: Application development and maintenance, digital transformation, cloud services, cybersecurity and managed IT services.
  • Engineering and R&D Services: Product engineering for clients in aerospace, automotive, semiconductors, telecom and consumer electronics.
  • Products and Platforms: Proprietary and acquired software products in areas such as DevOps, security, marketing automation and data management.

The company operates delivery centres in India and across multiple countries, with a workforce drawn from numerous nationalities. Its largest delivery hubs in India are located in Noida, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.

Corporate governance

HCLTech is part of the broader HCL Group, in which the founding Nadar family retains a significant stake. Roshni Nadar Malhotra, daughter of founder Shiv Nadar, chairs the company. The executive leadership has been led by professional managers including Vineet Nayar and, more recently, C. Vijayakumar as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.

Significance

HCLTech is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Indian IT services industry, alongside Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys and Wipro. It is notable for its early focus on infrastructure management services and engineering R&D, segments where it built scale earlier than several peers. The company has also contributed to the growth of the National Capital Region as an IT and outsourcing hub, particularly around Noida.
