The institution was developed by the Guru Kashi Educational Trust, which had earlier established educational ventures in the region, and was subsequently granted the status of a state private university by the Government of Punjab.

The university awards diplomas, bachelor's and master's degrees, and doctoral degrees, and operates as a degree-granting body recognised under the relevant Punjab state legislation governing private universities.

Campus

The campus is situated on the outskirts of Talwandi Sabo, in the Malwa region of Punjab. The town lies in the predominantly agrarian belt of southern Punjab and is connected by road to Bathinda, the principal urban centre of the district.

Significance

As one of the private universities established in the Malwa region, Guru Kashi University contributes to higher education access in southern Punjab, a part of the state that historically had fewer institutions of higher learning compared with the central and northern districts. Its location at Talwandi Sabo also places it within a town of Sikh historical importance.
