Background

The idea of a university serving the Gujarati-speaking region of the former Bombay State took shape in the 1940s, with public figures and educationists pressing for an institution rooted in the linguistic and cultural identity of the area. Gujarat University was constituted by the Gujarat University Act passed by the Bombay Legislature, and it began functioning in 1949 with Ahmedabad as its seat. In its early years, the university drew on the academic traditions of older institutions in the region such as Gujarat Vidyapith and the colleges of Ahmedabad.

Following the bifurcation of Bombay State and the creation of Gujarat in 1960, the university continued as a major instrument of higher education in the new state, before further universities were carved out to serve other regions of Gujarat.

Campus and organisation

The main campus is situated in the Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad and houses the central administration, postgraduate departments, the university library, examination wings, and the convocation hall. The campus is spread over a substantial area in the educational district of the city, in proximity to several colleges, research institutions, and cultural bodies.

The university is organised into faculties covering arts, science, commerce, education, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, management, and engineering, with academic activities carried out through university teaching departments, recognised research institutes, and affiliated colleges. The Vice-Chancellor is the principal academic and executive officer, supported by statutory bodies such as the Senate, the Syndicate, the Academic Council, and the Board of Studies.

Academics

Programmes are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil., and doctoral levels. The medium of instruction varies by subject and college, with Gujarati and English used widely; Hindi is also used for selected courses. The university conducts university-wide examinations for affiliated colleges and awards degrees in line with regulations of the University Grants Commission and respective professional councils such as the Bar Council of India, the Medical Council of India / National Medical Commission, and the All India Council for Technical Education.
