Background

The building that became the Grand Hotel originated in the 19th century on Chowringhee, then the principal European thoroughfare of colonial Calcutta. The site initially functioned as a boarding house before being expanded and converted into a full-service hotel. Over time, the property grew through the acquisition of adjoining premises along Chowringhee, giving the hotel its distinctive elongated colonnaded façade.

History

During the early 20th century, the Grand Hotel established itself as one of Calcutta's leading establishments, catering to British officials, businessmen and travellers passing through the capital of British India. During the Second World War, the hotel was requisitioned to provide accommodation for Allied troops stationed in or transiting through Calcutta.

In the period after the war, the property came under the control of the hotelier Mohan Singh Oberoi, founder of the Oberoi Group. Its acquisition was a significant step in the expansion of Oberoi's hotel chain in India and gave the group a flagship presence in eastern India. The hotel has since been operated as part of the Oberoi luxury portfolio, with periodic renovations to modernise its facilities while preserving the colonial-era architectural character of the building.

Architecture and features

The Grand Hotel is noted for its long arcaded frontage along Jawaharlal Nehru Road, with a covered walkway that has remained a recognisable feature of the Chowringhee streetscape. Internally, the hotel is built around a central courtyard containing a swimming pool surrounded by palm trees, an unusual configuration in the densely built central business district of Kolkata. The property includes guest rooms and suites, multiple restaurants and bars, banqueting facilities and a spa.

Significance

The Grand Hotel holds a prominent place in Kolkata's hospitality and architectural heritage. It is associated with the social history of colonial Calcutta and remains one of the city's principal venues for hosting visiting dignitaries, business travellers and large-scale events. Together with neighbouring landmarks, it forms part of the historic ensemble of buildings along Chowringhee that defines central Kolkata's urban character.
