Govind Guru Tribal University is a state public university located in Banswara, in the southern part of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Established by the Government of Rajasthan, the university serves the predominantly tribal districts of the Wagad and Mewar regions, and is named after the social and religious reformer Govind Guru, who led the Bhagat movement among the Bhil and other tribal communities of southern Rajasthan and Gujarat in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Background
The southern Rajasthan region, comprising districts such as Banswara, Dungarpur and Pratapgarh, has historically been home to large Scheduled Tribe populations, particularly the Bhil community. Higher education access in this region has traditionally lagged behind other parts of the state. The creation of a dedicated affiliating university in Banswara was intended to expand access to higher education for tribal students and to bring the colleges of the region under a localised academic administration, instead of their being affiliated to larger universities elsewhere in Rajasthan.
Academic role
As an affiliating university, Govind Guru Tribal University oversees a network of government and private colleges across its territorial jurisdiction. It conducts examinations, awards degrees and prescribes curricula for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in disciplines including arts, commerce, science and education. The university also undertakes its own teaching and research activity on its campus in Banswara.
Significance
The university is one of a small number of higher education institutions in India explicitly oriented towards a tribal-majority constituency. By being headquartered in Banswara rather than in a major urban centre, it functions as a regional academic hub for the Wagad belt and adjoining areas, and contributes to local employment, teacher training and research with a bearing on tribal society, language and development.
Naming
Govind Guru (1858–1931) is remembered for organising tribal communities through the Samp Sabha and for his role in the Mangarh incident of 1913, in which a large number of Bhil followers were killed by colonial forces at Mangarh Hill on the Rajasthan–Gujarat border. The university's name reflects the cultural and historical identity of the region it serves.
