Background
The Government of India announced a phased expansion of medical education infrastructure under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the establishment of new medical colleges attached to district or referral hospitals. As part of this expansion in Jammu and Kashmir, new government medical colleges were sanctioned in districts that previously lacked tertiary medical institutions, including Baramulla, Anantnag, Doda, Kathua, Rajouri, Udhampur, Handwara and Kupwara.
GMC Handwara was established to serve north Kashmir, an area where patients had historically depended on referral hospitals in Srinagar for advanced care. The college is intended to function alongside an associated teaching hospital, providing both undergraduate medical training and clinical services to the surrounding population.
Academics
The institution is designed to offer the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, with admissions conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) and counselling administered by the Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE), Jammu and Kashmir. Recognition and intake capacity are governed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), which replaced the Medical Council of India in 2020.
Significance
The establishment of a medical college at Handwara is regarded as significant for healthcare access in the frontier districts of north Kashmir, including Kupwara and adjoining areas near the Line of Control. Beyond medical education, the college is expected to support specialist clinical services, reduce the patient load on Srinagar-based hospitals such as SKIMS and SMHS, and create local employment in the health sector.
