Overview
Gondia is a city in the eastern part of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Gondia district, which was carved out of the larger Bhandara district in 1999. Located close to the state's border with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Gondia is an important commercial centre in the Vidarbha region and is widely known for its rice mills, earning it the popular epithet of the "Rice City" of Maharashtra.

Geography
Gondia lies in the easternmost part of Maharashtra, on the border with Madhya Pradesh to the north and Chhattisgarh to the east. The terrain in and around the district is largely a mix of plains, low hills and forested tracts. The area forms part of the catchment of the Wainganga river system, and several tanks and reservoirs in the district support paddy cultivation, which dominates local agriculture.

Gondia is the headquarters of Gondia district, which is one of the districts of the Nagpur Division. The city is governed by the Gondia Municipal Council. The district is divided into several tahsils including Gondia, Tirora, Goregaon, Amgaon, Salekasa, Sadak Arjuni, Arjuni Morgaon and Deori.
Economy
The economy of Gondia is closely tied to agriculture and agro-processing. Paddy is the dominant crop in the surrounding district, and the city hosts a large number of rice mills, making it one of the major rice-trading centres in central India. Trade in tendu leaves, forest produce and timber, drawn from the forests of the surrounding districts, also contributes to local commerce. Small-scale manufacturing, retail trade and railway-linked employment are other important elements of the local economy.

Rail
Gondia Junction is a major railway station on the Howrah–Mumbai trunk route via Nagpur, and is operated by the South East Central Railway zone of Indian Railways. It functions as a junction with branch lines towards Jabalpur, Chanda Fort and Balaghat, making it a significant rail hub in eastern Vidarbha.
Road and air
Gondia is connected by national and state highways to Nagpur, Bhandara, Raipur and Jabalpur. The Birsi Airport, located on the outskirts of the city, has been developed to support regional civil aviation operations and pilot training.
Education
Gondia hosts a number of colleges affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University and other state universities, offering programmes in arts, commerce, science, education, engineering and medicine. The Shri Bhagwantrao Shankarrao Manohar Science, Gondia Education Society's Manoharbhai Patel Institute of Engineering and Technology, and a government medical college in the district are among the notable institutions associated with the area.
Tourism and surroundings
The district around Gondia is known for its biodiversity. The Navegaon National Park and the Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, both located in the district, are protected areas that form part of a tiger conservation landscape connected to the wider Tadoba and Pench ecosystems. These reserves shelter tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur and a wide range of bird species, and attract domestic wildlife tourism.

Gondia is a medium-sized urban centre with a population that is predominantly Marathi- and Hindi-speaking. The district has a significant tribal population, with communities such as the Gond contributing to the cultural mix; the name of the city itself is generally linked to this community.
