Geography

Gokak is situated in the Deccan plateau region of northern Karnataka. The Ghataprabha, a tributary of the Krishna river, flows past the town. About 6 kilometres from the town, the river plunges over a sandstone cliff to form the Gokak Falls, one of the well-known waterfalls of Karnataka. A pedestrian hanging bridge over the gorge near the falls is a notable engineering feature dating from the colonial period.

History

The region around Gokak has been part of successive south Indian polities, including the Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas, the Vijayanagara Empire, and later the Maratha and Mysore spheres of influence, before coming under British administration as part of the Bombay Presidency.

In the late nineteenth century, Gokak Falls became the site of one of the earliest hydroelectric installations in India, constructed to power the Gokak Mills, a cotton textile factory established near the river. The mill township that grew around the factory remains a distinct settlement adjacent to the town.

Economy

The local economy combines agriculture, agro-processing and small-scale industry. Sugarcane, cotton and oilseeds are important crops in the surrounding taluk, supported by irrigation from the Ghataprabha. Sugar mills, cotton textiles and allied industries contribute to industrial activity in and around the town.

Civic administration

Gokak is administered by a municipal council responsible for civic services within the town limits. It functions as the headquarters of Gokak taluk, one of the administrative subdivisions of Belagavi district.

Transport

The town is connected by road to Belagavi and to other parts of northern Karnataka. Gokak Road railway station, located a few kilometres from the town, lies on the rail network linking the region to wider destinations in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Culture and language

Kannada is the principal language. The Gokak agitation of 1980–1982, a popular movement demanding primary status for Kannada in the state's education and administration, takes its name from the chairman of the committee that recommended the policy and is associated in public memory with the broader linguistic identity movement in Karnataka.
