Geography
Gohad lies in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, in the ravine country drained by the Chambal and its tributaries. The town is situated between Gwalior and Bhind, and falls within the broader Gird/Chambal plateau zone, characterised by undulating land and seasonal streams.
History
Gohad rose to prominence in the late 17th and 18th centuries as the capital of a Jat principality founded by the Rana chiefs. Under rulers such as Rana Bhim Singh and later Rana Chhatar Singh, the state contested control over the strategic fortress of Gwalior with the Marathas and the Mughals.
In the 1760s and 1770s, the Ranas of Gohad allied at various times with the British East India Company and other regional powers against the Marathas. Gwalior Fort changed hands between the Scindias of Gwalior and the Ranas of Gohad several times during this period. By the early 19th century, following Maratha consolidation in the region, Gohad's territories were absorbed into the Gwalior State of the Scindias, and the town's political importance declined, though it remained a local administrative centre.
Gohad Fort
The Gohad Fort, built by the Rana rulers, is the most prominent historical landmark of the town. Constructed largely in sandstone, the fort features bastions, gateways, and inner palace structures, and stands as a reminder of the principality's former status. It is among the heritage sites associated with the Jat rulers of the Chambal region.
Administration
Gohad is administered as a nagar palika (municipal council) and serves as the headquarters of Gohad tehsil within Bhind district. The Gohad assembly constituency is part of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly and is reserved for Scheduled Castes; the area falls under the Bhind Lok Sabha constituency.
Economy
The local economy is primarily agrarian, with cultivation of wheat, mustard, bajra, and pulses on the surrounding plains. The town also functions as a small market centre for nearby villages, hosting trade in grain, oilseeds, and everyday goods.
Transport
Gohad is connected by road to Bhind, Gwalior, and Morena. The nearest major railway junction and airport are at Gwalior, which serves as the principal transport hub for the surrounding region.
