Background

The Godrej business traces its origins to 1897, when Ardeshir Godrej began manufacturing locks in Bombay. Over the following decades, the family enterprise expanded into safes, soaps, furniture, typewriters, refrigerators, and a wide range of engineering and consumer products. The businesses were historically organised under Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company and several allied entities.

In 2024, the Godrej family announced a formal restructuring that divided the group's businesses between two branches of the family. Under this arrangement, the manufacturing and engineering-led businesses, anchored by Godrej & Boyce, were placed under the umbrella now identified as Godrej Enterprises Group, while the listed consumer goods, real estate, agrochemicals, and financial services businesses continued under Godrej Industries Group.

Businesses

The group's portfolio spans a number of long-standing Godrej product lines and divisions, including:

  • Locking solutions and security equipment, including safes and vaults.
  • Home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners.
  • Office and home furniture, and modular interior solutions.
  • Aerospace components and systems, supplying Indian space and defence programmes.
  • Precision engineering, tooling, and process equipment.
  • Material handling equipment, including forklifts and warehousing solutions.
  • Construction and infrastructure-related engineering services.

Significance

Godrej Enterprises Group represents one of the oldest continuously operating industrial enterprises in India, with a manufacturing legacy of more than a century. Its products have featured in major national projects, including supply contracts for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and other defence and infrastructure programmes. The group is also notable for retaining a large, vertically integrated manufacturing footprint at Vikhroli in Mumbai, where extensive mangrove lands owned by the group form an ecologically significant area along the city's eastern shoreline.
