Background
The institution was originally established in Vadodara as the National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI), India's first university dedicated to the rail and transportation sector. NRTI was set up as a deemed-to-be university to address the human resource and research needs of Indian Railways and the broader transport ecosystem.
It was subsequently restructured and renamed Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya as a central university through an Act of Parliament, aligning the institution with the Government of India's PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity. The renaming and upgradation expanded the university's mandate from rail-centric education to a broader multi-modal transport and logistics focus.
Academics
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes covering areas such as transportation engineering, transport technology, logistics and supply chain management, transport systems, and business management with a transport orientation. Programmes are designed to combine classroom learning with practical exposure to railway and transport operations.
The campus in Vadodara is co-located with established railway training facilities in the city, which has historically been a major hub for railway training in India.
Significance
As a sectoral central university, GSV is intended to create a dedicated talent pipeline for India's transport and logistics industry, support applied research in areas such as high-speed rail, freight efficiency and multi-modal logistics, and act as a knowledge partner to the Ministry of Railways and other transport ministries. It is positioned as a key institutional component of the PM Gati Shakti initiative.
