Overview
Garulia is a town and a municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, it forms part of the densely urbanised industrial belt that stretches north of Kolkata along the river. Garulia lies within the Barrackpore subdivision and is part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.

Geography
Garulia is situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, in the conurbation that runs along the river from Kolkata up to Kalyani. It is bordered by Noapara and Bhatpara along the urban strip, with Ichapur and the cantonment area also lying nearby. The town is part of the alluvial plain of the lower Ganga delta, with a flat topography and a tropical wet-and-dry climate typical of southern West Bengal.
Civic administration
The town is administered by the Garulia Municipality, which is responsible for local civic services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, street lighting and primary public health. The municipality is one of several urban local bodies along the Barrackpore industrial belt, others including Bhatpara, North Barrackpore, Barrackpore and Titagarh.
Economy
Garulia historically formed part of the jute manufacturing belt that developed along the Hooghly during the colonial period, when the river served as a transport corridor for raw jute and finished goods. Jute mills, engineering units and small-scale industries continue to operate in and around the town, alongside trade and services catering to the local population.
Transport
Garulia is connected by road to neighbouring towns along the Barrackpore Trunk Road corridor. Suburban rail services on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line of the Eastern Railway pass through nearby stations, providing connectivity to Kolkata and to towns further north. Ferry services across the Hooghly historically linked the eastern bank towns with Hooghly district on the western bank.
Demographics
Garulia is a densely populated urban settlement with a mixed Bengali-speaking population, including communities associated with the jute and engineering industries that drew migrants from various parts of eastern India during the twentieth century. Hindi and Urdu are also spoken in addition to Bengali.
