Background
The university traces its origins to Gangadhar Meher College, an institution of higher education in Sambalpur with a long history of teaching in arts, science, and commerce. The college, which had been granted autonomous status, served generations of students from western Odisha and adjoining regions before being upgraded to a unitary university by the Government of Odisha.
The campus is situated in Sambalpur, a district headquarters town on the banks of the Mahanadi river. Sambalpur is also home to other institutions of higher learning, including Sambalpur University and the Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur, making the town a regional educational hub.
Academics
The university is organised into schools and departments covering disciplines such as Odia, English, history, political science, economics, sociology, philosophy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, computer science, and commerce. It conducts admissions through entrance examinations and offers postgraduate as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in several departments.
Research and affiliations
As a unitary university, Gangadhar Meher University functions as a teaching and research institution rather than as an affiliating body. It follows the regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission and the higher education department of the Government of Odisha.
Significance
The upgradation of Gangadhar Meher College into a full-fledged university was viewed as an important step in expanding higher education infrastructure in western Odisha, a region historically served by fewer universities than the coastal belt. By retaining the legacy of the parent college and the name of the poet Gangadhar Meher, the institution carries forward a strong association with Odia literary and cultural heritage.
