Background

Gandhigram itself was founded in 1947 by G. Ramachandran and Soundaram Ramachandran as a constructive-work centre inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. The settlement, located at the foothills of the Sirumalai range, became a base for rural reconstruction activities including khadi work, basic education, and public health. The Gandhigram Rural Institute grew out of this milieu as an experiment in higher education tied to rural India's needs.

The institute was established in 1956 as a Rural Institute under the scheme recommended by the Government of India for promoting rural higher education. In 1976, the Government of India conferred on it the status of a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, after which it came to be known as the Gandhigram Rural Institute – Deemed University.

Academic structure

The institute is organised into faculties and schools covering rural development, agriculture and animal husbandry, rural-oriented sciences, English and foreign languages, Tamil and Indian languages, Gandhian thought and peace science, and rural health and sanitation. Programmes integrate classroom teaching with extension work and field-based components, reflecting the institute's founding emphasis on linking education with the rural community.

Significance

Its model of combining academic learning with rural extension has influenced subsequent rural universities and development-studies programmes in India. The institute contributes to research and policy work in fields such as rural development, panchayati raj, sustainable agriculture, and adult education.
