Overview
The Forest Research Institute (FRI; Hindi: वन अनुसन्धान संस्थान) is a premier institution for forestry research in India. It functions as a Natural Resource Service training institute under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, and serves officers of the Indian Forest Service as well as various State Forest Service cadres.
The institute is located at Dehradun in Uttarakhand and is regarded as among the oldest institutions of its kind. Its campus is recognised for its long association with forestry research and training in the Indian subcontinent.
In 1991, the Forest Research Institute was declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission, allowing it to offer recognised academic programmes alongside its research activities.
The FRI campus also hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), the staff college responsible for training officers selected for the Indian Forest Service (IFS). The co-location of these institutions makes the campus an important centre for forestry education, training and research in India.
