Background

The district takes its name from the town of Farrukhabad, which was founded in the early 18th century and named after the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar. Under the Nawabs of Farrukhabad, a line of Bangash Pathan rulers, the town became a regional centre of trade and administration. After the decline of Bangash power, the area passed under the control of the Awadh Nawabs and subsequently came under British administration, with Fatehgarh developing as a military cantonment.

Geography

Farrukhabad district is situated in the alluvial plain of the upper Ganga basin. The Ganga forms a major part of its boundary, and the Ramganga and Kali Nadi also flow through or along the district. The terrain is largely flat and fertile, supporting intensive cultivation. The district is bordered by Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Kannauj and Etah districts.

Administration

The district is part of the Kanpur division of Uttar Pradesh and is administered by a District Magistrate. It is divided into tehsils and development blocks, and contains both the Farrukhabad and Fatehgarh urban areas, the latter being the seat of district administration. Farrukhabad is represented in the Lok Sabha by the Farrukhabad parliamentary constituency.

Economy

Agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy, with potato being a particularly important crop; the district is among the leading potato-producing areas of Uttar Pradesh. Other crops include wheat, rice, sugarcane and tobacco. Farrukhabad is historically known for hand-block printed textiles, a craft tradition that continues to support local artisans.

History and significance

Fatehgarh was the site of significant events during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when its garrison and European population were involved in the wider uprising in the North-Western Provinces. The town retained military importance under the British and continues to host an army cantonment. The district's textile printing and handloom industries have given it a place in the cultural and economic geography of the region.
