Background
The city of Faridabad was historically associated with Shaikh Farid, a 17th-century Sufi figure during the Mughal era, after whom the settlement is named. The area later developed as an industrial township in the years following Indian independence, when refugees from West Punjab were resettled here. Faridabad became part of Haryana when the state was carved out of Punjab on 1 November 1966.
Formation and reorganisation
Faridabad district was created out of Gurgaon district in 1979. In 1997, the district was bifurcated and a new district, Palwal, was carved out of its southern tehsils in 2008, leaving Faridabad with a smaller but more urbanised territory. The district is part of the Faridabad administrative division of Haryana.
Geography
The district lies in the south-eastern corner of Haryana. It is bounded by the National Capital Territory of Delhi to the north, the state of Uttar Pradesh across the Yamuna to the east, Palwal district to the south, and Gurugram and Nuh districts to the west. The terrain is largely flat alluvial plain, with low ridges of the Aravalli Range running along the western fringe.
Administration
The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner. It is subdivided into tehsils and sub-tehsils including Faridabad, Ballabgarh, and Tigaon. For policing, Faridabad has its own police commissionerate. The district sends representatives to the Haryana Legislative Assembly from constituencies such as Faridabad, Faridabad NIT, Ballabgarh, Badkhal, and Tigaon, and forms part of the Faridabad Lok Sabha constituency.
Economy
Faridabad is one of the principal industrial districts of Haryana, with manufacturing in tractors, automobile components, motorcycles, refrigerators, garments, and engineering goods. Major industrial estates lie along the Mathura Road corridor. The district is connected to Delhi by the Delhi–Mathura National Highway (NH 19), the Delhi Metro Violet Line, and suburban rail services on the Delhi–Mathura line.
