Overview
Farida Jalal (born Farida Sami; 18 May 1950) is an Indian actress who has primarily worked in Hindi films. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, she has appeared in more than 200 films and is recognised for her character-driven performances in independent cinema as well as supporting roles in mainstream Bollywood productions. Jalal has also been a familiar presence on Indian television, particularly through popular sitcoms of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

Career
Film debut and early years
Jalal began her acting career with Taqdeer (1967). Her early breakthrough came with a role in Aradhana (1969), one of the defining Hindi films of its era. She followed this with Paras (1971), for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Transition to character roles
From the late 1980s onwards, Jalal moved increasingly into character roles, often portraying motherly figures and strong female characters. She won further Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Henna (1991) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). Her performance in Shyam Benegal-era parallel cinema was recognised when she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) for Mammo (1994).
Later film work
Jalal continued to work prolifically in Hindi films through the 1990s and early 2000s, becoming a household name for her supporting performances. She received the Best Actress Award at the 2012 Harlem International Film Festival for her role in A Gran Plan (2012).
Television
Alongside her film work, Jalal has appeared in numerous Indian television productions. Her notable small-screen credits include the sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, the family comedy Dekh Bhai Dekh, and the children's fantasy series Shararat.
